As part of the follow-up to the Digital Wallonia 4 Trust actions led by the operator Agoria, in collaboration with Sud Media, Lab Davanac and BE Blockchain, on Friday 9 May we took part in the ‘Media, AI & Web3’ hackathon, which brought together around thirty students to discuss media, artificial intelligence and Web3 at Creative Spark.

Over the course of a weekend, the Creative Spark coworking space in Mont-Saint-Guibert was transformed into a veritable innovation laboratory. From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 May, around thirty communication and journalism students, mainly from IHECS and UCLouvain, took part in the ‘Media, AI & Web3’ hackathon. This 48-hour creative sprint was organised as part of the Digital Wallonia 4 Trust programme, run by Agoria in conjunction with Sud Media, Lab Davanac, BE Blockchain and the Walloon Public Service.
The event, hosted by journalist and entrepreneur Damien Van Achter, aimed to explore the synergies between emerging technologies and the media, with a particular focus on generative artificial intelligence, blockchain and Web3. These are technologies that are already revolutionising digital usage, posing new challenges but also huge opportunities for content creators, journalists and professionals in the cultural and creative industries.
A fast-paced and inspiring programme
The adventure began on Friday late afternoon with a welcome, followed by an energising Ice Breaker, a collective definition of the jury's criteria, then creative brainstorming and the formation of project groups. After a convivial dinner, the first ideas were prototyped in the evening during a ‘Hands On’ session.
Saturday was all about experimentation. The groups refined their concepts and developed innovative projects combining intelligent algorithms, NFT, augmented storytelling, interactivity and decentralised verification tools. All in a collaborative atmosphere that encouraged daring.
Sunday kicked off with a second Keynote, followed by a final production session. After breakfast, the participants prepared their final pitches, which were presented to an attentive panel of judges in the early afternoon. It was a great opportunity for each group to showcase their work, creativity and ability to integrate complex technologies into concrete projects.
Training future digital professionals
The aim of the hackathon was more than just a competition. Above all, it was to familiarise students with digital change, give them the opportunity to experiment with new professional practices and raise their awareness of the impact of emerging technologies on journalism and communication. The exchanges with the experts, the continuous feedback and the diversity of the profiles present enabled a real increase in skills.
This type of initiative is fully in line with the missions of DigitalWallonia4Trust, which aims to strengthen confidence in digital technology in Wallonia by supporting the co-creation, experimentation and adoption of ethical and sustainable technological solutions.
Free and open to all, this hackathon showed just how ready Wallonia's young people are to take up the challenges of the future, provided they are given the means to express themselves, innovate and collaborate. A date has already been set for the next event, given the urgent need to rethink the media in the age of AI and Web3.
